'Natural causes'? Ri-iiight

Not since Elvis died while under the care of "Dr. Nick" has any celebrity's death been so suspicious as that of 32-year-old Brittany Murphy:
A shocking number of strong prescription meds were found on Brittany Murphy's bedroom nightstand before her sudden Dec. 20 death, according to notes from an investigator with the Los Angeles coroner's office.
According to the notes (obtained by TMZ.com), the medications included Topamax (anti-seizure meds also to prevent migraines), Methylprednisolone (anti-inflammatory), Fluoxetine (depression med), Klonopin (anxiety med), Carbamazepine (treats Diabetic symptoms and is also a bipolar med), Ativan (anxiety med), Vicoprofen (pain reliever), Propranolol (hypertension, used to prevent heart attacks), Biaxin (antibiotic), Hydrocodone (pain med) and miscellaneous vitamins. . . .
The notes state Murphy "had been complaining of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pain" for 7 to 10 days prior to her death. . . .
"Death by medicine" is not as rare as some would have you believe. A pill for this, a pill for that, pills to deal with side effects of other pills -- pretty soon, your system becomes so distorted by the chemical intake that it's hard to tell what's really wrong with you, if anything.

The question now is whether Brittany Murphy had any disease other than hypochondria.

  1. Propanolol was probably in there to counteract some of the side effects of the other meds (akithesia).

  2. It is so sad. I am glad that she did not have any kids but maybe that is why so went off the deep end with all the drugs; she had an empty Godless life like so many other secularists.

I also beleive that the doctor and the drug store that prescribed/filled all these drugs to her should be charged with involuntary manslaughter but that won't happen.

Most top conservatives on all these blogs don't quote Michael Savage very much but he really hit the bullseye with his book-"Liberalism is a Mental Disorder".

Merry Christmas everyone and you too Robert Stacy McCain.

  3. Stacy: It's only "natural" that a person's body gives out when abused by drugs. Just as it's "natural" to bleed out after you've been shot.
    Natural causes!
(The only other explanation would be super-natural causes. Rule out bite marks on her neck!)

  4. None of the other meds listed there are known to cause akathisia, whihc is a consequence of meds with significant dopaminergic activity.

But she may have been experiencing other activiation type side effects from the fluoxetine (tremors, anxiety) if the dose was high enough, and that could explain the propranolol. But that still strikes me as a bad idea in someone with an obviously significant mood disorder. Propranolol is a beta blocker with pretty strong central nervous system side effects, it can cause depression all by itself.

Lorazepam (Ativan), or sedating antihistamines like hydroxyzine are more commonly used for these side effects (that, or lowering the dose of the offending agent.)

Carbamazepine is not for diabetes, it was originally developed as an anti-convulsant, but it is also used as a mood stabilizer (an adjunct for psychosis, depression, or bipolar disorder.)

Topamax is also used as an adjunct for mood disorders, but is considered second line at best.

None of those meds listed are known for being particularly cardiotoxic, if these are related to her death it would almost certainly mean a large (and likely intentional) overdose. The single drug that would best match the available information would be the propranolol, a large overdose causing severe slowing of the heart, leading to arrest.
